Often referred to as the African Bank or the Kirkness Building, the Bank of Africa Limited Building was constructed in revivalist styling. In its early days, it not only served as the premise for the Bank of Africa but also housed the offices of KIRKNESS. The dual occupancy explains its other popular moniker: the Kirkness Building.
This beautiful building is a notable design by the firm MILNE and SLADDIN. As the official architects for the Bank of Africa, their last recorded project was the Bank of Africa Building, erected in 1910. The design embodies classical elements, reminiscent of the famed English Palladian architecture, reflecting the aesthetics and aspirations of the time.
One particularly striking feature of the building is the foundation stone. It proudly bears the names of the brothers TA SLADDIN FRIBA and R SLADDIN FSI, celebrating their contribution to this architectural marvel. Additionally, the tympanum of the structure displays the crest with the initials BAL, which stands for Bank of Africa Limited. This was a clear indication of the building's purpose, a declaration made all the more prominent with the same letters intricately designed into the decorative wrought iron balustrades of the balconies.
However, the association with the Bank of Africa was short-lived. Just two years after its construction, in 1912, the Bank was incorporated into the National Bank. But this building, with its strong architectural foundation, continued to serve financial institutions. Following the departure of the National Bank, the premises were soon occupied by the South African Mutual Bank. A subtle yet telling reminder of this phase can be witnessed in the frosted glass of the building's lower windows.
Over the years, the building has undergone various transformations, its identity molding according to its occupants. The South African Mutual eventually gave way to the South African Postal Services, marking yet another chapter in the building's storied existence.
